Guillermo Cano was a Colombian journalist and the director of the newspaper El Espectador. He was born on August 12, 1925, in Bogotá, Colombia, and was the son of the newspaper's founder, Fidel Cano Gutiérrez. Cano was renowned for his investigative journalism and reporting on political corruption and drug trafficking in Colombia. He also supported freedom of the press and the need for journalists to perform their duties without fear of reprisal.
Cano was assassinated on December 17, 1986, by hitmen from the Medellín drug cartel, who were angered by his reporting on their illegal activities. His murder was widely condemned and sparked a wave of protests in Colombia. In his honor, the Colombian government established the Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation, which works to promote the safety and protection of journalists and to defend freedom of expression around the world.
